Introduction to the Critical Investigation

Why do comic book movies like The Avengers reinforce traditional gender stereotypes and what impact does this have on audiences?

Comic book movies like the avengers reinforce the gender stereotypes as the heroes are usually dominated by the male gender and the main protagonists are usually male characters like 'the hulk' and they are more focused on by the audience. The gender stereotypes are reinforced, as there are less women involved and positively represented, also, sometimes they reinforce Mulvey's theory of 'Male Gaze', as 'men act and women appear'. However, one way in which these traditional stereotypes are diverted is by using a female as a superhero. Usually, they wouldn't even include a woman as one of the main characters, as they are seen as weak and vulnerable. This impacts the audience positively, especially the women viewers as they can associate themselves with strong and independent women rather than the vulnerable 'princess' roles that they are usually given.
